Last week, also went to Philadelphia. The American concourse (A) at the airport is pretty small - only about 10 gates or so; there is a gift shop right by security on your way out that sells post cards. There are 3 or 4 food options in a mini food court in the middle of the concourse; stopped at the Olde whatever Tavern, and the food (Philly Cheesesteak) wasn't too bad. There is a train stop and the train to Central Philly goes about every 1/2 hour (:12 and :42), but you'd still have to take a cab from the train station to your final hotel destination unless it's right there.
I stayed at the Embassy Suites Hotel Philadelphia-Center City for one night. I've stayed there before, and it's not too bad, especially if you can get a good discounted rate. Read the full review here.
It used to be an apartment building, but they converted it to an Embassy Suites, and the plus side is that the rooms are pretty big. It's built around a center core and it's a circular building, so sometimes getting your bearings on each floor may take a minute, but not too bad otherwise. Friendly staff, and it's attached to a TGI Friday's - that's also where they have breakfast. Read the full review here.
The location of the hotel is pretty good; looks like it is within walking distance of some of the attractions and museums; not sure how far it is to center city, but I'd guess no more than a mile. The hotel has the basic fitness center - 2 treadmills a bike and some weight machines - no one was there when I was using it this time.
Final note - the cab fare to/from the airport is fixed at $26.25 - very few cabs take credit cards, so have $30 - $35 ready for each way.
